Correcting a Social Security Number

The procedure for correcting a social security number is found in Fed. R. Bankr. P. 1009(c).

When a debtor or debtor's counsel becomes aware that the social security number or taxpayer identification number on the Debtor's Statement About Your Social Security Number (Form B 121) is incorrect OR that the number reflected on the 341 notice is incorrect, the debtor shall:

(a) Promptly file with the court an amended Statement About Your Social Security Number, Form  B121, using the restricted event "Social Security Number(s) Statement," AND

(b) Notice the amended Statement About Your Social Security Number to all entities listed on Schedules D, E/F, G and H, and file proof of that notice with the court.

Do not redact the social security number on the amended statement sent to creditors; the creditors received the incorrect social security number on the notice of meeting of creditors.

Do not file the unredacted amended statement with your proof of service to protect the debtor's private identifiers.

If the debtor or counsel becomes aware of an incorrect social security number after the case is closed or after discharge has been entered, a request for an amendment of the social security number must be made by notice and motion. The motion shall indicate whether the debtor seeks an amended discharge.
